By Car to Okehampton

Okehampton is conveniently situated just off the A30 main road between Exeter and Launceston. Follow the signs to Okehampton and the brown tourist signs to the Dartmoor Railway and the Youth Hostel. Okehampton station has a large free car park with space for coaches. For Satnavs, the postcode is EX20 1EJ.

By Car to Sampford Courtenay

Whilst most of our visitors use our main station at Okehampton, occasionally we operate services which call at Sampford Courtenay railway station, 4 miles from Okehampton. Please check our services page for details. There is a small free car park but note that there are no other facilities. Sampford Courtenay station is on the B3215 road between Bow and Okehampton, about 1.5 miles from the village itself. From the mini-roundabout on the A3072 in Sampford Courtenay village, take the minor road signposted Belstone Corner. Postcode for Satnav is EX20 2SP.

[Please note that our station at Meldon, at the north eastern end of Meldon Viaduct, has no direct vehicular access. The nearest car parks are at Meldon Reservoir (OS Grid ref: SX 562 917) and Meldon (Aplite) Quarry (OS Grid ref: SX 567 922). Meldon station is on the Granite Way cycling and walking path].

By Train

During the summer on Sundays only, direct train services operate between St James Park, Exeter Central, Exeter St Davids, Crediton, Sampford Courtenay and Okehampton operated by First Great Western. See the Sunday Rover page for more details, and our services page for possible connecting services.

For other days and times of the year, you can change at Exeter St David’s for the number 6 or 6A direct bus service to Okehampton operated by Stagecoach Southwest (see below). Check National Rail Enquiries for train times.

By Bus

The number 6 and 6A buses run between Exeter Bus Station, Exeter St David’s railway station and Okehampton. Leave the bus in Okehampton town centre and walk to the station (approximately 0.5 miles, but note that it is uphill). Timetables can be found on the Stagecoach website, or via the Traveline Southwest website.

By Bike

Okehampton is situated on National Route 27 of the National Cycle Network Route which runs from Ilfracombe to Plymouth and is known as the Devon Coast to Coast cycle route. The 11 mile route between Okehampton and Lydford runs along the former railway line and is known as the Granite Way. Visit Sustrans for more information.
